Message:   Because the in-line revs and develops torque at low rpm, it does not respond well to the technologies that are now used to make motors meet emissions.
The newer motors, such as the V-6 designs, rev much higher and burn their fuel load in their combustion chambers more completely than the in lines.
An in-line would have to be adapted to overhead cam and change the valve train configuration to match that performance and they didn't have the economic incentive to do that with the limited number of models that use the six.
