Message:   Chrysler didn't start using engine serial numbers until 1968 on passenger cars. Most trucks from our era and up into the 70's don't even have them stamped on the pan rail.
The only numbers on the engines were the year of production and cu.in. stampings.[A-1965, B-1966, C-1967, D-1968, 6-1976, 7-1977, etc.] It would look like this if it was a 1966 361 [B 361]. There are other stampings located on the pad as well, but that is another story.
As mentioned the year of production and the cu.in. on all "B" motors is located on a pad below the distributor on the right side of block just ahead of the cylinder head. All "RB" motors have the year of production and cu.in. stamped on a pad just ahead of the front valley pan rail toward the left side of the block.
The casting numbers located on the side of the block between the deck and the freeze plugs will identify the block cu.in., but it won't identify the production year only a range of years. The casting numbers basically will only identify the cu.in. and era during it's production.
