"older dana 70 gears"

Need to put 5:83 gears in my dana 70, was told because it is older style (pre 1970) that the ring gear is 1/8 thinner. is it possible to machine it thinner, or do i have to scrap front axle. This gear ratio 5:83 was never made in old dana 70 style so i am limited (my truck has a rockwell rear in it)
