If it was the short shaft you would have no power to the transfer and no power to the front drive, it sounds as if you have broken someting in the tranfer going to the rear wheels or the diff in the rear wheels. When you try to go in two wheel drive does the drive shaft to the rear turn? If it does it is in the rear diff. If it does not it is in the transfer case.
