I have used the engine paint from Carquest with better success than just regular enamel paint. The engine paint is supposed to hold up well under heat changes, and be resistant to oil (after it dries). It's actually made by plasitcote. I use it on transmission and transfer cases with good luck also. I put on at least 2-3 coats, and there should be no rust underneath.
I havent had any luck with OTC Hi-temp manifold paints so I steer clear of those.
X-O rust is a rust inhibiting implement paint. You have to prep and prime before you paint, unlike POR-15 though.
They have a nice "cast iron" gray color also, it has a bit more silver in it and may match the original color better, but I like the contrast of the lighter gray and black appiontments, with a few small parts trimmed out in the color of the truck itself.
Not original, but I think it looks good when it's done.
