Willy N,

I responded to your initial question and suggested you use chemical stripper to take the paint off. Please don't sandblast the hood. The hood is thin sheet metal, almost pliable.

Once in Fredericksburg, Texas I tried to talk an owner of a 1927 Lincoln sedan into using a chemical stripper. He insisted there was a reputable
man in the community that used a very fine sand in blasting; he called it a "sugar sand" since it was so white and fine.

Next morning this gentleman was singing the blues. The heat of the blasting warped the doors and they no longer closed as well as before the blasting. Where are you going to get doors for a 1927 Lincoln sedan in the Texas hill country.

Sand blasting is for heavy gauge metal, frames, tie rods, rims, bumpers, but not for sheet metal. If you do not know how to blast there is better than a 50% chance you will do damage to the hood. Chemical stripping will leave the metal clean. You will need only a metal prep as a chemical etcher before you prime.

But if you do sand blast be certain that you come back with a metal prep. However, if blasted, you should use a metal prep that has a metal conditioner (zinc phosphate) in it. The conditioner lifts moisture and air away from the metal. It also fills the pits caused by sand blasting. After drying an hour you can then prime a short while later as you will have a seal coat under the primer.

If you wish to wait you can e-mail me for a mail order address where you can obtain these products.
