Static Ground Strap

Any o' you grey hairs remember in the '50s & '60s some people used to run a, fabric of some kind, static ground strap from the frame or axle to drag on the ground? It seems I recall the Plymouth dealer installing such a thing on our new '57 Suburban station wagon. It would eliminate the static spark generated when you slide across the vinyl seat and touch the door handle. I have an ex-Air Force '68 W200 crewcab that has every body panel (doors, hood, fenders, etc.) attached by small, individual, soldered, woven ground straps. Was this a radio truck? Do all Air Force vehicles have this? I spend time on airport ramps, among the planes, at a couple of airshows a year. I guess it might do me good to have an earth-link static ground strap. What should I use? The old ones looked like a piece of tire 'bout an inch wide and 16 inches long. Would a slice of steel-belted tire work? Would this be Air Force authentic? Who cares? ... HEY MISTER !!! something's hanging off the bottom of your truck! Thanx, Ricky
