The chain cannot slip,...without causing great damage to the transfer case, normally breaking the outer case housing, unless you have a broken gear or shaft. That would VERY noticeable at ALL times. What may be happenning is a simple matter of linkage adjustment. It is very common for frame flexing or body twist to cause the shift lever to move slightly, just enough, if the shift rods are slightly out of adjustment, to put your case into neutral momentarily. Once you lose traction and roll back to a more "normal" position, the t-case re-engages. Adjusted the linkage a bit to prevent it from disengaging during those conditions. It may take a few trial and error adjustments until you find the correct position. I saw one truck where the sheetmetal around the shift lever would actually flex enough to hit the shift lever and knock it out of 4 wheel drive,..only momentarily.
