Brett,
It was 1980 when I last bought cable for one of my winchs. This was from a local farm store. I know it is 6 strands with a fiber core. I believe each stand is made up of 19 wires. I do not know the quality, but it has rusted slightly if I let the oil get washed off. It has stood up well to hard use. I kinked it really bad in a couple of places from rolling the cable off the side of the drum (one of the hazards of working with a full drum and pulling a load off to the side), but with careful straightening, and continually rewinding the cable under slight load, I was able to work the kinks out. I now have to search real hard to tell where the kinks were. That is one advantage to fiber core, at least the cable I bought, it is pliable.

I went to a industrial rigging supplier several years ago for some other supplies. While there, I talked with the owner about my trucks and winches. He said that really there is no 7/16 cable designed to work around a diameter as small as the Braden MU2 winch drum. But, he did say that fiber core would be a lot better than wire core if one were intent upon using 7/16 on the MU2 drum.

One thing that I got into the habit of doing long ago is whenever I am finished using a winch, I always leave the cable out and weave the excess around the front bumper. When I get back home I unspool all of the cable and use the winch to pull the truck up a slight incline. Sometimes I apply the parking brake to create more of a load on the winch. This way, all layers of the cable are wound in tight and ready for the next job. I have found that If I do not unspool all of the cable to do this, the layers closest to the drum may stay loose enough for the top layers to pull down into them under load.

Clint
