Paul's concerns should be our guide.

I don't think it is worth doing if we can't make a big enough buy to save a few $$$s.
One place I saw a ~30% price break at 5000; I don't have any feel for this. That's 20 winch loads, based on Clint's 250' of 7/16" cable. We could also consider the savings on shipping.

What "kind" of cable? Improved plow steel? 6x19 or 6x36? wire core or fiber core?

reference prices from WebRiggingSupply
for 7/16" right regular lay

matrix core berak $/ft
6x19 IWRC 20400 .77
6x19 FC 16540 .66
6x36 IWRC 20400 .94
6x36 FC 16540 .72

They also sell prefab tow truck winch cables, but their longest is 150' for which they want $136. Their tow truck cables are wire cored, FWIW.

So if we go with the stiffer cable and can pull a 25% off list deal (i.e. spool quantity), that would be $145. for 250'; the more flexible cable would be $235.
This compares to $275 for 150' from VPW.

Quality? Gee, guys this is out of my personal experience, but I *do* know the hoisting and rigging guys at the mine and New Mexico Tech and will ask around.

Dave
