Don't know about the "thumping" noise, but I agree with the carb/fuel suggestions regarding bad running and lots of black smoke. The farmer trick to a carb "flooding out" (If the choke is open and fuel is just getting dumped into the engine due to a float sticking) is to tap with a pocket knife handle or similar percusion instrument around the float bowl area of the carb. This will often free up the float and make the truck run better, until it sticks next time. Hence the little indentations on a lot of old Carters and Stromberg 1 bbl.s. If you're making a dent, you're tapping is too hard. But even if this doesn't work, it doesn't mean that the float is not (possibly) sticking. A primitive method, but I must admit that I find it deeply satisfying to make my truck run better by hitting it.
