A lot of vehicles from the 40's and early 50's used copper fuel lines, before going to steel lines. 5/16" should be more than adequete for a stock motor, 3/8" would be used in a high performance application, not that it can't be used in a stock application, only thing is going with 3/8" you will probably have to reduce it down to 5/16" at your fuel pump, so it would defeat the purpose of running a large line for more flow.
