except if you want it to look authentic. Mine came with no oil filter and no air filter (wonder why the compression is low?) so I put on a spin-on adapter attached via a homemade bracket to the head bolts. I hooked it up as described, except I used one line to the hole in the horizontal surface next to the dipstick and one line to the front of the block behind the generator. Somebody told me there's an oil gallery that runs the length of the block along that side and any of the plugs along it can be used for the filter or for the pressure gage. That might explain why you see them plumbed various ways. A nice thing about a spin-on adapter vs the modern spin-onto-the-block setup is you can remove the filter without spilling oil all over. You can get spin-on adapters at a speed shop or mail order.
