In the posts below, several comments are made that gas eats the galvanizing off pipe and/or the galvanizing flakes off, therefore such pipe is not used for gas.
Would those who state this opinion please cite chapter and verse in the plumbing code to back up these claims.
Unless the code has changed since I bought my last copy, UPC 1988, galvanized pipe is not only approved, sec 1212(a), but required for gas pipe exposed to weather above grade, sec 1213(f).
However, buried gas pipe, in every jurisdiction I have worked, is required to be factory wrapped pipe, with all joints wrapped to 40 mil thickness with listed pipe wrap.
Galvanized and the cheap crap u buy at Home Depot with the green coating on it is NOT APPROVED for burial.
I have worked on many roof mounted systems and seen thousands of feet of galvanized gas pipe, up to 3". In 15 years as a CA licensed plumbing contractor, I have yet to see any problem with the galvanizing as claimed in the other posts. Nor have I ever seen any articles discussing such a problem in any of the trade journals, including Reeves Journal, Builder and Contractor.
