I bought a set of nasty looking rims from VPW when I did my 59 W200 and removed the junk tires obviously, then had them sandblasted. I painted my rims with a spraygun with good results, painting every square inch of rim. When they mounted my new tires they took extra care and used a rubber mallet to set the ring with no damage visible. The key is to find a tire shop that will respect your time and money invested before you got there. The biggest thing I found was watching how I tightened the lug nuts without scratching the paint.
