I have a 24x28 (28 deep) garage right now. My doors are on the north side and my work bench is on the south. My entry is on the east, which will make a lean to very practicle. I have 9' sidewalls and a 6' loft at the peak. The peak runs north and south. The usuable storage up top is only 4' wide, but that's enough for the air compressor and light storage. One of the cross beams is actually three 2x6's laminated together. That's what I use to jerk engines and such. I have a set of cabinets that were built from 1" plywood (talk about heavy) on car dollies that I use for storage and a teardown bench. I built a steel frame for the bench to take the weight. Oh, I heat it with a woodstove made from a 55 gallon drum. I tear it down and store it up top in the 'off' season.
Now if I only had Willy's free time!
The only thing I don't care for are the posts down the middle that seperate the two bays. A steel building eliminates the need for center support. I would go with steel and configure it to make the 24' dimension across the front, if at all possible. It gives more room to work under the hood.
Wow, that's 4 cents worth...
