Vaughn and Todd are right.
Some of older diesels you need to bump throttle up a hair to keep oil pressure up an stable.
Some old 2 stroke diesels you could idle some they didn't recommend.
Some do it to keep batterys up or keep heat in cab up some do it to keep cab cool with a/c.
I had an old 318 detriot 2 cycle if left running parked i had to bump up throttle.
But you should always idle a diesel for a period before shutting down.
Depends on displacemnet and application its used for.
Some can run for weeks, months on end and there shut down just to do maint. and refired up before they cool down.
Applications are endless and operating procedures are endless, each mfgr is different.
