the 89 trucks are great they are not as powerful as the 91 and up but still agreat truck the 89 is not intercooled so ya lose some power there and they have a larger turbo housing on them so they dont spool up as quickly, as for the tranny if not abused they hold up fairly well 98000 miles is nothing for the cummins , just really getting broken in good, i dont know how much weight you intend to pull , but id say you would be getting your moneys worth if it is in good condition,take a look at some of the dodge diesl website and you can learn more and make your decision from there, my everyday truck is a 93 Power Ram 4x4 with the cummins and has an auto in it, ive been alittle bit of everywhere in ole betsy and she still runs and drives like new, if ya cant find the links ost back and ill send them to ya, have a good one.
