I guess a big part of the attraction is the stock look. However, another issue is that, when you have a flatbed, your wheel travel off-road is somewhat limited compared to when you have a stock bed. This is because the stock bed has wheel wells to accomodate the tires moving up into the wells. But a flatbed does not have this room to allow the tires to move upward during the harder off-roading that causes a lot of suspension compression and frame twist, unless the flatbed is built way up high off the frame.
