Not always. I used a '85 vacumn axle that was off a 1 ton. From '85 to '87 Dodge made a 1 ton DANA 44 (1 ton from short shaft out) I replaced the shift on the fly feature with a one piece Moser axle, and installed a one piece tube and Hubs, wahla! A modified DANA 44 1 ton!
