The non-winch M35s have the bumper mounted with the notch facing down so the top surface is flat. The winch trucks have the bumper turned around so the notch is up. If you have a choice, it's easier to swap the whole bumper/winch assembly than to remove the bumper, flip it over, and then add the winch. In either case, it's hard to get the bumper off since it's held on with many large, tight, often rusty, bolts and you can't get an air wrench on the nuts inside the frame channel. The radiator grill has two sections, so when you put a winch on, you just remove the lower section, rather than having to find a special shorter grill.

The M35s have many clever "dual-use" items like this. Another one is the rear hubs, which can be flipped around to bring the drums out further when using single wheels so that the rear tires will be in line with the front ones. Normally, they run duals in the rear.

By the way, does anybody know of any other PTOs that fit the M35's Spicer 3052/3053 tranny? It would be nice if there was a more common one that would fit.
