As for a time of year, sometime in the spring when the trees begin to open leaf buds
but not so late as they obscure the view of mountains and valleys and the weather still has that slight cool edge and before those mountain copperheads and rattlers get to moving around good. Mt. Cheha state park in the Talladega National forest (near anniston,Al) used to have plenty 4-wheeling roads. They have a small but nice motel on top plus cabins and small A-frames w/fireplaces for weekend rentals dotted around plus a campground. Its a little closer to FL. the Mts aren't as big but good views. Might be something to consider for another year down the road.
