Valve tap

Ok guys, I've got a 230 in one of my PW's, it runs good, doesn't smoke, but has a loud tapping when it gets warm. It sounds just like a loud tappet but I checked all the clearances and even squirted oil on them, stuck my feeler gauge between the tappet and valve while running but the tapping wouldn't stop. I asked this question once before and someone said they thought a piston was hitting the head and making a tapping sound. The rod bearings do have some play because I hear a slight knock at idle. Is this possible? It still sounds like a valve tap to me but I can't make it go away. Anyone have any thoughts? It doesn't make the noise when cold, only when warm. I really don't want to tear it down if I don't have to. Thanks in advance.
