Fuel Pumps

Everyone knows I've been having starting issues. We hotwired the ignition switch, 12volts wired right to the bottom of the ceramic resistor which theoretically should keep the engine running. It has spark, and a nice healthy jolt at that (learn something everyday, don't hold the spark plug and try to crank it... OUCH).

That's what makes life so interesting doing stupid things. So anyway, I noticed in my rootings around under the hood, that the fuel filter is empty. It positively has fuel in the tank. Sunday, when it died, it was hard to start... Got it started kept it running got to the intersection and let the clutch out just enough for it to roll and it died again...

so my question is: If a fuel pump is weak, can it just all of a sudden stop pumping fuel while the engine is running? Has anyone ever had an issue with this?
