Carb Linkage on Back of Block

After reviewing several pictures of different PWs I think I have concluded the 48 PW linkage for the carb goes on the back of the block not the Firewall. Is this correct? Problem with the manuals they show differnt years in the pictures so it is hard to get Year Correct information as to re/assembley of stuff you did not take apart. Mark H.
