I just finished licenseing my 1950 FF in California. You can run a year of manufacture (yom)plates in Ca. but you need a front and rear. Furthermore you have to pay a one time fee to re-register the yom plates and an annual fee to run the yom plates. Now since you are running yom plates the are considered as regular commercial plates and you are now subject to the weight fee according to DMV. The other option which I chose is to rum a historical plate. Heres the catch, with a historical plate there are no weight fees, and no annual registration fees to run the plates as there are with the yom plates. The DMV says that with historical plates you have restricted driving privelages which are confined to parades, historical events, and to and from these events as well as driving for repair reasons. The point is who is watching my driving habits...nobody!! So the bottom line is what is the cost differance between yom vs. historical plates on an annual basis? The weight fee to run the yom plates was about $150., the annual registration to run the yom plates was $20.00. So on an annual basis the yom plates would cost the California driver and extra $170.00. OH dont forget the cost to purchase the yom plates as well as the re-register fee! dont we all just love Grey Doofus the govenor of our beautiful state!
