Good post Paul!
That is a proven technique for ANY welding. (Billy is now laughing!) Except for the plenishing part.
With any thickness of metal, too much consentrated heat will distort your work, it just shows up sooner and is more pronounced with sheet metal. I have had frame rails shrink by over a half inch when running continuous welds. That is why you see small "stitch" sections on long lateral welds. Note: This does NOT apply when using JB Weld! ha!ha!
