HELP, My engine just went south! - M880

I thought I was really making progress restoring my 1977 Dodge M880, but when driving back from the electrical repair shop, I started getting a noise like I was driving with no oil. Banging and grinding. The oil pressure guage was going UP instead of down, and visually the oil level looks fine. I think it may be a rod bearing??? I am in shock because it has a 318 government engine and only has 70K on it's clock. Anyway, people from CA are telling me a rebuild should cost $700-1200, but around here in the Allentwon PA area, I m getting quotes of $2000-2500. Can anyone help? I have not used my powerwagon all winter :-(
