It used to be fuel was cheaper.

The diesel will get better MPG so fuel is still cheaper.

Diesel's tend to go many more miles then gas engines due to their lower RPM's = less wear

With the exception of starting them in the real cold I think diesels seem to hold up and perform better in bad conditions like high heat and load in the summer compared to gas engines. I am sure theres stories about both gas and diesel.

My experience with the 2 diesels I own/owned being a Chevy 6.2 (shut up norm!) and a John Deere 950 diesel tractor have been they tend to go a long ways before needing work but when its time it can be costly. My 6.2 went 185000 miles and then I spent 1000$ on an injector pump and associated parts. It ran great after the work when I traded it in.

My JD950 diesel will work all afternoon long in the July heat of Kansas. Last summer it was 108 and the engine never missed a beat.

Some people dont like the noise and fuel smell.
