I am rather certain it depends on the model/design of the winch as it pertains to rotation against the safety brake. An "off the bottom" designed winch that is "over the top" wound MAY not hold when power is no longer applied due to the safety brake not working as expected. (Think of a pipe wrench being used backwards). This is more of a problem on the side of a hill than trying to get out of a mud pit.
