Gordon, I had a similar problem in an early Ford diesel. The clutch spring load was so high that the throw bearing was binding on the main shaft sleve. This caused wear/metal transfer until the hydraulics didn'r have enough grunt to completely disengage the clutch, at this point you couldn't get into gear without stopping the engine. Trans internal wear was caused by synchro rings trying to engage gears while still under engine load.
