I don't know the original use, but it was mounted to brackets welded to the axle housing, the controll valve was in the drag link, and it was fed by an antique pump. In retrospect I think the pump needed more volume, but my e.o. steering box was totally shot, so I'm not sure. I built a home brew 'helicoil' type mount and changed the column to a f-250 so I could add turn signals, but never finished the upgrade. The power box worked better than the o.e. one, even without the pump hooked up. It would be nice to find a modern manual box to fit, otherwise go with the saginaw from the dodge, international, or chrysler cordoba?
