Hi Dave...... remember there are no dumb question except the one you did not ask and you broke big $$$ on your truck.

On the M-37 it should be in the down position to prevent the lever from being shifted by accident. It reuqires lifting with your boot toe cap when you need to reel in or out with the winch.
some fourwheelers running in rough terrain prefer to leave the winch in neutral up front at the winch so that if by accident it got thrown in gear it would not break anything. Keep in mind that if you release the front gear on the wich you must rap your winch cable with tight burlap stips on the cable can and will unwind and drag on the ground.

If you intend to fix it make sure it keeps the little lock plate in the down position.

Next thing you will want to know is how strong a shear pin (nail) do I use?????
