O.K., You guys have got me using synthetic lubes in just about everything that has had its fluids changed lately. I put "new" (to me) axles under my 78 W150 last weekend, and of course went synthetic. Now, the limited slip in the Dana 70 rear in not doing much slip limiting. This is going to be my snow plow truck, so the limited slip is a priority. The axle came out of an 85 Ford F350 single wheel truck, and the l-s-d was tight enough that I had trouble turning the assembly on the shop floor while installing it. Does anyone know if this vintage of Dana 70 uses a plate type, or a cone type limited slip? Could the synthetic lube be causing the "slippage" problem? Does the Dana l-s-d design require a certain amount of resistance (ie; a slight application of the parking brake a-la Hummer) to activate? The Ford dealer has a "friction modifier" oil addative for their l-s-d axles, but in my experience, it has always been used to "quiet" an overly agressive one. Anyone have experience with this type of product? I'll be working on the truck this weekend, and am wondering if it's worthwhile cleaning the axle out (again) and putting regular fluid back in. Thoughts anyone??? J.V.L.
