I had the same problem as John. The insulation was deteriorated and bare wire was shorting out on the frame. Check the wires that go from the drivers side headlight to the passenger side headlight.Other things that could be bad are the headlight switch or the dimmer switch on the floor. I also have a fuse block under the dash next to the steering column.
