Just to add to the very good comments.
Whenever you setup the winch - pulling out cable,
moving the free wheel lever or engaging the PTO -
take an additional second and shut the motor off.
With the motor off things may move a little as levers are moved etc, you will not be seriously hurt or dismembered.
2 - Never work alone. Get a partner (my 8 yr old son is very good). When I need to reel in the slack or windup the cable after working I have my partner sit in the cab working the clutch, gears, etc. If the is ANY problem the engine is shutoff immediately.
3 - Use heavy duty, loose leather gloves to protect your hands.
4 - Raise the hood to protect the operator and windshield.
5 - Heavy blankets on the cable are a good idea.
