Some things to consider before you do anything. No matter what type powerplant you choose, rebuilt original or modern, engine life will be directly affected by the 5.83 gear ratio in both F&R axles.Unless you plan on installing the 4.86 ring&pinion set for both F&R axles, avail. thru MARS, I would just rebuild the 230 flathead & rewire it.V-8 power would be great until you wore the engine out within a year from excessive rpm's.Gear noise would also be a problem w/5.83's.These trucks were designed for 40-45mph w/as-is drive train,in mostly off-road conditions.I'm not trying to discourage you only to make you aware of the limitations of this type vehicle in its current state. As I suggested,it would be to your advantage to install the higher gearsets if a V-8 is used and upgrade at least the front brakes to disc. using the current kits avail. If you plan to put money into this vehicle you will have the best 4x4 money can buy,a POWER WAGON!
