4.89 gears are again avail from Veteran Vehicles,
and maybe from MARS. I have got sets from both
places in past years. $318 PER SET and you obviously need 2 sets per truck. I have installed
6 sets of these in M37s and PWs and I am not a
mechanic. It is pretty straightforward but you
have to make sure the backlash is ok,and it is
stamped on each gear. I used a dial indicator
but for the last two sets, I just estimated it.
Remember, you are not racing these things and
as long as they are not too tight, or too loose,
you will be ok. Otherwise, it is fairly easy
and mine all work good. BAcklash is adjustable
on these DODGE diffs. Actually the hardest part
is pressing off the old bearings, unless you want
to buy new ones. A stock bearing splitter will not
work well. You need the real ordnance one, or
modify a commercial one, which I did. (and will
sell for $25) It has to fit in the splines of
the pinion gear since there is not enough clearance for the regular commercial splitter to
fit.
Have fun.
