You can use a 6 volt starter with 12 volts. There are some problems.
Since the resistance of the motor has not changed and the voltage has doubled, the current draw will double (v=ir). The power output of the motor will 4x (p=vi). The motor will fail a lot sooner and the strain on the drive gears is 4x.
The starter will spin almost twice as fast.
Keep the engine in top shape, the correct weight oil in the engine for the weather and the starter will be ok for a long time. Limit cranking the engine over to less than 30 sec to reduce the chances of overheating.
The starter from an early slant 6 (60-63) may be adapted if you are lucky.
