A little while back I did some work on my '61 PTO. I messed up the shifter shaft trying to remove the seals. I sent it up the road to Babbit Bearing and had just the damaged section ground down about .060 and welded up oversize and re-ground.
I know this different than your shaft, given that I was dealing with a seal surface, but I was very pleased with the repair.
I would take it to the shop you mentioned that does crank journals.
