by cutting down hardened steel to make PTO shafts. I posted this a few days ago and cut and pasted it for you here. This shaft was about 12' long, ran from a transfer case chain drive through 4 pillow blocks with 3 angles and never gave me a bit or trouble. all I ahd to do was grease the joints.

If you're creative, you can use hot rolled shaft and weld the end yokes on. I had to do that on my big IH 4x4 because the keys would rattle out of the shaft's keyways from off-road vibration, even with set screws and safety wires. Fixing a PTO shaft in the snow or mud at three AM and 12º is not fun
