I'm running an Isky cam in my truck (230 cid flathead). I bought the cam from Vintage Power Wagons for $300, including heavy duty valve springs.

To be honest, I have not yet driven my truck enough to get a really good impression of how the cam affects things, but it does seem to me that the lower-rpm torque is somewhat compromised. With 9X16 tires, 4.89 differential gears and newly rebuilt engine with this cam in it, I noticed that I have to let the clutch out more slowly and give the engine a little more gas than I did before, whenever I take off from a dead stop. This is when I'm starting out in 2nd gear. In fact, sometimes I find it better to just go ahead and put it in 1st gear when taking off from a dead stop, even on level ground. I don't remember having to do that before the rebuild, even though I had the same size tires and the same gearing.

The Isky camshaft is intended to improve torque output of the engine at higher rpm's, compared with the stock camshaft. That way, the truck will be more driveable at highway speeds. The down side of this is that the lower rpm range suffers some loss of torque, but it shouldn't really be a big deal unless you do a lot of heavy hauling or towing on steep hills, or unless you do some serious, slow rock-crawling or something of that nature.

I'd be interested to hear other experiences and opinions.

Matt
