I know a guy who once had a friend with a leaky steering box (in an Oldsmobile). They replaced all of the seals and gaskets multiple times, trying to figure out where the leak was coming from. It was really more of a seep than a big leak, but still made a mess after a while.

Anyway, they finally decided to add some special additive to the steering box oil, and they shined a flourescent light on the box, and found that the casting was letting the oil out through the pores! That was rather amazing to me.

If you don't paint the inside of the casting with something, you may or may not have any trouble, but it's hard to say. During the WWII years, parts were being cranked out of the factories so fast, to meet the demand, it would not surprise me if some of those castings, as well as the early post-war castings, were rather porous. So it may have been standard procedure by Dodge (and some others) to paint the insides of all castings, in order to prevent leakage.
