In some cases you can pull the plugs (one at a time with the coil disabled) and do a compression test to see which cylinders are at fault. Only works if the gasket blew in between them.
On a side note. My truck had been pinging and could never find the problem. Thought it might be gas or carbon build up. The head gasket finally let go and while tearing it down found the culprit. Had a hairline crack in the distributer that was allowing the it to crossfire between cylinders. All together now and after 20,000 miles runs fine and no pinging even with cheap fuel. Kevin
