Quick and easy way to ID a late 3/4 ton axle?

I have a centered read axle from a 3/4 WC. I am to understand that if you want to run it in a PW and put in a 4.89 gearset, you need to have a late model axle. How can I tell if mine is early or late, and can I just swap differential carriers since I already have 4.89's on a PW carrier?
P.S. It dosent look like the centered yoke to offset axle is going to work. I put it in and did'nt notice much of a difference in the gear noise, it was still there just sounded different.
