You could build a tank that was identical in every way, but spanned the whole width of the frame rails. The only limitation I can think of is you could no longer install a rear PTO.
The difference in price would be negligable between stainless & mild steel, that's the only reason I thought stainless was a good idea. The only difference between the two being the difference in material costs.
If you look closely at a gas tank, you'll see why it would not be cheap. My first thought was that maybe they could be made for $200 each or so, but unless you were building hundreds of them & were set-up like Dave Maher is with his First Series Beds, these pretty much have to be all hand made.
I'm sure that many corners could be cut in order to save on the price, but if you want to make it look unidentifiable from original, that would be considerably more work I think.
I've always felt that making a reproduction part any less than 100% perfect & unidentifiable from original is a waste of time.
That's my philosophy anyway.
