REDLINE? I have always associated the term reline with the point at which an engine reaches its limit for sustained safe running, not its rpm limit. Some vehicles have the reline marked on the tack as in my 90 mazda PU.
The reline marks, are for those too dense to know when they are over reving the engine by sound. My 98 S-10 has an idiot light that says "shift". If I used it I would continually be shifting and lugging the engine, not to mention I wouldn't have time to pay attention to traffic.
Since your flathead is rated at its max. HP at 3200rpms, why go beyond that? Of course at times the situation will dictate you rev. over 3200rpms but aside from those times what could you gain. If you don't have the formula that calculates tire-dia.,gear ratio and speed, someone will gladly give it to you and you can play around with diff. dia. tires and 4:89 vs 5:83 gears at diff. speeds with this formula.
As someone has already said, you can put the time and money into a 230 and have a well built and balanced engine that will easily do 4500rpms and more. It should have a higher reline tolerance, how much higher, who knows?
