Chrysler tested engines at max brake HP rpm for 50 hours. Usually max brake HP was measured at 3600 rpm. I personally think the 2500 rpm is way to low a limit for these engines. The govonors are usually set to 3200 rpm and I would bet you can run at that speed all day with no problems. It would not surprise me if stationary units such as generators/pumps were running at or near that 3200 rpm level for years. And this was using the lubrication technology of the 40s and 50s. I personally have driven 218 flatheads cross country at 3000 rpm plus with no problems. Just keep water and oil in them.
