Thanks for info so far.

I did check the amp meter, and it does deflect with the heater or headlights on. (this is with a new battery in it). It also deflects but only slightly (5 amps?) when it raises the plow....this used to cause a massive deflection....like 30-40 amps.

I have not checked to see if it charges...will do so soon.

I did not know a battery could be charged in the wrong direction and thus get a reversed polarity. I will drain completely as suggested and recharge. Since this battery did go completely dead, it is possible it got charged in the reverse direciton.

Regarding the generator question...it does definitely have a regulator that is wired up. The truck is 65 WM300 with a 251....this owned by a Ontario Hydro the charging system could have been upgraded.

I thougth it had an alternator because it is short...about 6 inches long and shaped like modern alternators, not like old style generators. However, I can't say for sure whether this is a generator or an alternator....it is pretty grimey.

Did they make generators that look like alternators?

Thanks for all the feedback!
