If you hammer on work in a vise alot, you really need a blacksmith's vise. Normal (machinists) vises aren't made for hammering hard on; blacksmith's vises are. A blacksmith's vise has a leg that goes down to the floor, and the moveable jaw is attached to the fixed jaw via a heavy flat spring rather than a sliding screw mechanism. The screw that adjusts the vise provides clamping force but does not take the impact of heavy hammering.
